Techno Youth

I have been thinking about technology a lot lately.  The library is going to be starting a new, Connections center,  I spend hours online each day researching history, and I have all of these cool Macs in my classroom.  The pace in which it has entered my life, and the effects this has had on me over the last year has been profound. You are children of the cyber age, meaning that you are children born in an age where computer technology and electronics run your life. In other words, you are plugged into some electronic device 24/7. But are you aware or have you thought about the effects that it has on you and the surrounding world in which we live in? Do you know the rapid speed in which these new technologies have grown? Or are you immune to it because you are able to acquire the new skills needed to use these new advanced technologies.
Personally, I find myself sitting at my computer more and more, but I am also not in touch with every latest gadget. I want to be able to do it all, but I also want time to enjoy life and be outdoors away from the computer. I want to hang out with my family and friends.
At any rate, I think you will enjoy and learn a bit by watching this youtube video entitled Did You Know.  It is very interesting stuff. What do you think?

  1. Wow, I was shocked to find out that the average American teenager sends 2,272 text messages per month. I don't think I or any of my friends sends that many texts. I wonder if it matters whether you're a teen or a preteen. I actually send more emails than texts!

  2. Why does the average teen in America need to text 2,272 times a month.
I wonder how much money that would cost, and it may affect if their health and how fit they are.

  3. "Out of 240000000 TVs, 2000000 of them are in bathrooms."
This fact really surprised me because out of everyone I know, no one has their TV in their bathroom. Why would someone have to have a TV in their bathroom? Also, if these people have TVs in their bathrooms, how many TVs does an average person in America have?

  4. Interesting facts:
    2,000,000 TV's are in bathrooms
Wikipedia was launched in 2001. Now it features over 13 million articles in more than 200 languages.

Personally, I use a lot of technology in my daily life. For example, online courses, homework and socializing with friends. It is amazing how in few ears time things can change and people ca adapt. Just few years we didn't have computers and had poor technology, now everyone I know have a TV, computer and a phone in their houses. It is amazing how much people rely on technology these days. Technology these days people can spread so fast.

I agree with you Jane, people ARE becoming more dependent on technology which can be a bad thing. You can spread important news fast and connect with old friends but it can be not the best thing as you can feel you can't leave your house without your phone or would break down if the internet shut down.
However I can not say I am not dependent on technology either. I use the internet a LOT as well as email and Google docs to chat with friends which can be distracting when I need to complete my homework. So all in all I can connect to what you said: people are relying on technology way too much.

    2. That is a huge number. Personally, I don't understand the use of multiple TVs in one household. I have not watched tv since December at least--isn't it better to play outside or finish your homework? I never knew that anyone had a tv in their bathroom. Well, I guess it's entertaining. :)

  5. The Video you posted now made me realise how much people are using technology now, and how they use it. I didn't know any of these facts at all they give me information that technology can be good and bad. These changes are affecting peoples future but how. Is it affecting it in a good way or bad way, or maybe both? I think both.

  6. This video made me think about the development of technology. I wonder what will happen as developed countries progress, and developing countries are left behind? I also wonder how this will affect the world financially. Many things online are free, and book and newspaper sellers are selling less and less. How will this change our world?

    1. I agree with Kianna. As technology increasingly improves many things and companies we use to use a lot are starting to lose business. For example, Borders at Wheelock place. And even more, if people continue using technology, what will become of this world in the future? Factories, cars, airplanes will continue to be advanced as time passes. Leaving the world more and more damaged and polluted. The main question to this is, is technology good or bad. Technology will help us be able to access information more efficiently and be able to solve and understand things better. But it will also allow us to damage things fast and hack as well as post things that we shouldn't. So in short, where will technology lead us? How much things are we going to use that are natural. For example, in a few years time do we even need to use our legs, arms and voice. Or will technology be so advance that it will be able to do all this stuff for us. What will be left of us, as well as our becoming. As human beings WE were the ones who created all of this destruction as well as improvement.

  7. I like this video in general. It shows how much people use and rely on technology. You can definitely see how much technology has shaped our lives over the years. I like how it showed technology in 2 perspectives. Good and bad.

I agree with you to Alex the video was very general in facts. I agree with you about the two perspectives too. (Good and bad)I have something to add on to -You can definitely see how much technology has shaped over the years- technology also changed the world too.

    2. I agree with you I also liked this video in general to, because it had lots of interesting facts. I also have something to add on to your comment on -You can definitely see how much technology has shaped our lives over the years.-
Technology also changed the world around us too. I liked how you pointed out how the perspectives were good and bad.

    3. Yes Edric, technology has shaped the world. I definetley agree with you. Without technology, I wouldnt be able to type this write now. I think we rely on technology so much, we wouldnt be able to survive without it.

  8. I think that it is outstanding that 10 million- is the number of unique visitors ABC, NBC, CBS, get everymonth (these buisnesses have been around for a combined 200 years) 250 million- the number of unique visitors myspace, youtube, and facebook get every month colectivelly (none of these sites existed 6 years ago) that is truely an amazing fact.

  10. The fact that more video content was uploaded in the last two months on youtube than CBS, ABC, and NBC has since 1948. That shows that people use the internet more than TV. Plus, a lot of news content is taken from Tv, and uploaded to youtube. People today also like the idea of being seen by thousands of people on the internet, which motivates them to post more and more content. People also see cool videos online, or even on youtube and somehow make a copy of the video to put back onto the internet and get just as many views. It's amazing what happens on the internet.

    1. I agree with Max, it is really amazing of what happens on the internet these days, and how people are using the internet more then the TV. People in the world really are copying things from TV shows and posting them on youtube, and sometimes they even do it illegally. Also i agree with Max about the thing where people just post videos on youtube to get everyone in the world to know them. Which does make the person want to keep on posting more videos, so that they can let even more people know them. So overall i agree with Max on everything.

    2. I agree with you max that is shocking that people watch the same TV on the computer that is the sane thing on the TV. I also beg to differ because people can't see each other and have fun and it isn't as censored as TV so their is no rules on youtube except for some. So it think the no rule thing has a big affect on people.

  11. The fact that I thought was the most interesting and shocking in the entire video, was that a google book search scanner can digitize 1,000 pages every hour. I thought that this fact was interesting because, in the video all the other facts I've already seen before or heard before in other places. Another reason why is because this fact is the one that i noticed most, the people that made the video made this fact very noticeable. The last reason why I thought this fact was interesting is because I really like technology, and this fact was the first one that I found was cool that had to do with technology in the world. Those are all the reasons why I think this fact is the most interesting in the entire video.

    1. I agree with you, I've seen most of the facts before, but pretty much everything in the video was about technology. I don't exactly know what it means to digitize a page. So I don't really know ho to do that ether, and I bet a bunch of other people are the same, so whoever can, must do it quite a bit.

  12. One fact that I thought was very interesting was the fact
-Well over 1,000,000 books are published world wide each year. A google book search scanner can digitize 1,000 pages every hour.
I think this is an interesting fact because it surprises me now that more and more people are getting books online instead of paper. I have heard that some book stores hav closed down due to people getting them off of the internet. For me, I don't mind reading paper books or digital books. But, it depends on the book length.

  13. Interesting Fact: More video was uploaded to YouTube in the last 2 months than if ABC, NBC and Eyewitness news had been airing new content 24/7/365 since 1948 which was when ABC first started broadcasting.
This shows a lot of information to me. I think that slowly new technology is taking over the 'old' ones. YouTube wasn't even around a decade ago while ABC, NBC, and eyewitness have been around a combined 200 years. And already YouTube had more videos uploaded in the last two MONTHS than the entire 200 or so years ABC, NBC and Eyewitness has been around. That is pretty impressive. But I would like to keep around some of our 'old' technology like magazines and books. I do not think a kindle would replace a book by a mile. So while some of the new technology is nice, I do not necessarily want the old technology to disappear.

    1. I agree with you. I love to read, and while I do like Kindles, I think the feel of actually turning the pages of a good book is irreplaceable. However, some new technology is pretty cool, as you said.

Some new technology is lifesaving. Take heat-detecting planes. Without them, millions of people stranded on mountains would die, their bodies never to be discovered. But St. Bernard dogs, which you could call old "technology," and their huge noses to sniff people out also do the job of finding and rescuing people just as well.

So a combination of new AND old technology can be great, not just one or the other.

    2. I agree wholeheartedly with Katie. I also don't want the old technology to disappear, which like Katie, includes books. As technology advances though, I have realized that even though it has made things more convenient it may not have improved. For example downloading an eBook on an iPad or a kindle may be a whole lot more convenient than going out to buy a book, but it has a much greater chance of damaging your eyes. Thus, through this fact Katie presented to us, I am not completely thrilled though I must admit. I am not surprised as I personally use YouTube quite a bit. :p

  14. A fact- Well Over 1,000,000 books are published world wide every year! Americans have access to 1,000,000,000,000 web pages, 65,000 I phone's, 10,500 radio stations, 5,500 magazines and over 200 cable t.v networks. The t.v, news paper, magazines and the radio have gone down sense people don't use them anymore but the computer and phones have gone up because more people prefer them better!90% Of The 200 BILLION EMAILS SENT EVERYDAY ARE SPAMS. I LIKE THIS SAYING 'So what used to fit in a building, now fits in your pocket, what fits in your pocket now will fit inside a blood cell in 25 years? Well, that's impressive! (250 million) the number of visitors that visit myspace, youtube, and facebook get every month collectively (-none of these site were still existing 6 years ago-) that is truely an amazing fact.

  16. A fact that I've learned is that 95% of all songs downloaded in 2008 weren't paid for. Which means that they were downloaded illegaly. When people do that they should think of the people that make a living off of selling music and videos off the internet. While the new technology is good it is also bad, because it encourages bad online behaviour such as jacking music off the internet for free and illegaly. Next thing you know they could be hacking into the governments system and stealing confidential information. But new technology is also good because it helps people keep in contact even if they are half way around the world. It also helps students eduacation beacuse it is easier to access learning materials.
